2014 : The Best Moments

Hi Friends,

I am back with my customary one blog post per year dedicated to the most memorable moments of the last 365 days.

2014 was filled with the general ups and downs of life in London, or anywhere else in the world, except probably Denmark because life seems to be all figured out over there.

I had the chance to go on some lovely travels, get some quality time back home with my Toronto peeps, have immigration go my way, only had to move flats once this year (that is a London record for me) and meet new friends, rave, get drunk, and even try and be healthy a few times a week.

So – thanks to everyone who helped make it a special year. At some times it did seem pretty shit, but looking back on it all – it actually was an exceptional year.

January 14 – 19

We went to the Louvre, and we went to John Lewis.

It was a night out in many establishments in Soho and I couldn’t tell you where we went but I can say the next day was top 5 Hangover of my entire life.

At this point things were blurry.

Bored Bus Hopping

At a loss for things to do? Hop on a bus and see where it takes you. It took Jake and I to Waterloo, Peckham, Camberwell, Clapham and ended with a lovely dinner at Newman Street Tavern. It’s like a….free bus tour.

Buses are so underrated these days.

While we are on the topic of me loving food, the Pizza Club was born this year, and met quarterly to enjoy delicious pizza foods. 2013 : the best moments

Hi there, from London (still here! 52 weeks later!)

It’s that time of year again, when I give myself the task of going back into my meticulously noted diaries to see how my year really went. This year, for me, was a bit of a rollercoaster with start/stop issues, but it still resulted in some really amazing times with really amazing people and enough travelling to get hassled by border security upon re-entry to the UK.

I’d like to say thank you to my friends (old and new!) and family who have given me the memorable moments that made this year worth living.

So here is what happened…

January 4
It was my only Big Primin’ of the year but I was so happy to make it!

Ryan, you were missed from across the shores.

2012 : The Best Moments

Hi there. From London. 32 weeks later.

2012 is over, the world kept spinning, and although it has been two weeks since the ball dropped, I thought the eight month anniversary of my move was as good a time as ever to share the annual list that commemorates the good times had over the past 365 days.

Thanks to those I’ve known for many years, and those that I’ve known for a handful of months. To the old haunts, the new haunts, the new haunts which are kind of like old ones now and even to the horrible people who made me appreciate the good ones that much more. Thank you for making 2012 one like no other!

So without further ado, here are some of the best moments of my life in 2012.

January 14
Oysterfest 2012 at Jen & Kohns followed by a supposed Azari & III videoshoot, disguised as an after hours in a Dufferin St. warehouse. I don’t remember seeing any cameras, but I do remember being unsupervised with Kiwi and Kaveh and having a delicious, but not so glamorous (are they ever?) Big Mac at 5am.

March 24
Happy Endings, the Dim Sum Rave : I must admit, I was about as enthused about going to the first one of these as when I found out my flatmate owned a guitar, an amplifier and a love for singing 90s alternative (please God, make him stop before I finish writing this). But I came around the second time and had a lovely time. And by lovely I mean I drank a ton of G&T’s and can’t really tell you the rest.

Corisca Studios Rave. Not only was it good times with London homies, it was also a Canadian reunion. Got home at 8am. I still got it.

Actually, maybe I don’t got it, because I was really really tired the next day. But it was nothing Bloody Mary’s, lying in De Beauvoir Square for a few hours, and then wasting time in a Black Hair Emporium couldn’t cure.

Joe’s Birthday Thursday Bar. This had to be the most epic Thursday bar ever. Chunes, dancing, Joe behind the bar and the emotional speech at the pub. Oh, and also staying out all night at a shitty Farringdon club. Happy Birthday Joe!

This was actually taken on Sept 22. I do not have any footage from this even. Be grateful.

Jake’s England Visit. One of the best weeks of the year. Hackney lofts, a trip to Bath, nice dinners, touristing…I was essentially depressed for the rest of the year because I had so much fun.

Grey Leaving lunch and SME Halloween party. When Will told me to reserve a table for 20 for my leaving lunch I was skeptical. When no one showed up by 1pm I was worried/embarrassed. When everyone and more finally showed up and there weren’t enough chairs, I was pretty touched. As for the Halloween party? I left it all on the dancefloor and it was an amazing start to unemployment.

Red Bull Culture Clash and Afterparty with Westwooood. Annie Mac, Boy Betta Know, Diplo, Usher and then dancing to Westwood at some club in Holloway!? There’s only one thing that goes with a party like that, and that is pints of wine. Barf.

There are streamers in my hair. I hope Usher didn't notice.

Orphan Sunday Dinners
I don’t know how this idea came about, but it was a good one. Looking forward to more Sunday dinners at nice but affordable restaurants (in Hackney, never anywhere else, God no, I’d never venture farther than Mare Street on a Sunday).

Boiler Room. Thank God I was on the list because there was no way the security guard at the front secret entrance for talent only would have let me in. And the other security guard at the side secret entrance for guests only would never have opened that automatic gate for me. Really glad I didn’t tweet the location. Really glad it all worked out.

Christmas Touristing. When you’re unemployed and it’s the holiday season, there is really no excuse to not find a friend who is also unemployed (or just had a day off in this case) to enjoy the sights of London. If they are foreign like you then it’s a bonus.

Random Night Out. We were at Fika, then at Rasmus’ house, then somewhere in Shoreditch, then at The Birdcage, then The Dolphin, then got a kebab… It was a long night with many people but shout out to Stella from Coronation Street who I accosted at The Birdcage.

I may have missed the Volleyball finals, but I was there for most of the playoffs, and at least half of the regular season. I’m hoping for better attendance this winter, but I still like to think I contributed to The Paddington Diggers becoming league champions.

I’m still in holiday withdrawal. Hotel Fasano has all the best amenities. Trust.

So there you have it. I guess it was a pretty amazing year after all. As always, I look forward to what 2013 will bring. Hopefully more friends, fun, family and big time adventures.

I love you all, thanks for helping me through this year.

London Diary : Week 1

Image

So it’s been about a week in London – living the dream. It’s been pretty phenomenal and no complaints at all. First few days were spent running around the city getting life stuff done. Meeting up with Julia at the Tower Hotel, sipping on wine, you know – living the high life!

I was focused on solidifying as much of the London Tri-fecta as possible : Work, Home, Friends – and by Friday I was well on my way. Lovely Nadia organised a Friday night out for me to get acquainted with some weekend nightlife.

Image

Stop one was her east end house with her two very welcoming flatmates. BTW I say flatmates now. After drinking and smoking and starting to get our dance on in the living room, it was time for stop two.

Image
Shacklewell Arms is a large pub with a huge patio and some seriously good jams. They played everything I would hope to hear at a London night out – pretty much sounded like a typical Toronto pre-party. Like a true wannabe, I knew and loved every jam.

Hits such as:

Oi – More Fire Crew

Dj Luck & MC Neat / The Wideboys feat Dennis G – Sambuca

Triplets feat. Kele Le Roc – Sticky

Somore – I Refuse (What You Want) Industry Standard Mix

Jaheim – Just In Case (dub a holics remix)

But then when I was full into the whole retro garage tip, they thew down some:

Whitehead Brothers – Forget I was a G

B2K – Bump Bump Bump

Then they played some Pharrell and Jay Z and it was time to go down the street to the Turkish poolhall, just in time to see the cops break down the party, meaning that the dream was over and it was time to get a kebab and a £1.09 Cider at the off-license and to go home, drink, chat, and pass out at 5am.

Saturday was spent at G-A-Y and Heaven and to be honest was too much of a blur for me to even try and recount.

Until next time!

Plan B : Writer : Director : Rapper

In 2010 British rapper Plan B transformed himself into a soul singing storyteller with his chart topping album The Defamation of Strickland Banks.

Two years later, he’s given his singing voice a break, hung up his suit, and come back with some serious real talk as a director and as a rapper.

ILL Manors, the movie, is to be released May 4th, and has been described as a Hip Hop Musical (not to be confused with Hip Hoppera – Carmen Anyone?). Directed by Plan B, the story revolves around four characters living in his old neighbourhood (Forest Gate) over the course of a few days, based on some of his less than idyllic true to life experiences.

The six intertwined stories that comprise the movie will all feature their own song, all written and performed by Plan B. The full soundtrack will be released on May 7th – both projects are ones to watch.

The title track (and I am assuming the movie) deals with the extremism of England’s class system – the ever growing divide, the lack of respect, education, understanding and empathy and the abundance of violence, rage, and ignorance which culminated last summer in the London riots.

The recently released song deals with the word chav and it’s negative association. Plan B took to his blog this week to elaborate on his feelings towards that term in the media and in society.

“Just because you were lucky to be born into a family that can afford to give you a good education doesn’t make you better than anyone, it makes you lucky.”

There is a serious problem going on and kudos to Plan B for speaking out and opening peoples minds to a different way. This kind of problem could take forever to fix – maybe never will be – but if we were all more understanding I suppose then we could at least be hopeful for a brighter future.

Check out below for his video and also to download Prodigy’s slightly more chaotic version.

Rudimental : MNEK : Syron : Spoons

I have absolutely fallen in love with a track : Spoons by Rudimental featuring the talented MNEK and Syron. First just have a listen and let me know if you don’t agree that it is a perfect song.

So as I do, I wondered…who are these kids? They are apparently super cool Londoners who have captured the attention of BBC Radio greats as well as The XX and other influencers.

MNEK is only 17 and wrote All Fired Up by the Saturdays. He wrote that. Amazing.

Syron is only 19 – super cool and talented kick-ass chick who has the potential is getting noticed big time.

So as I embark on a super duper journey, I realise it is one month until my birthday and one month until I hope to run into MNEK & Syron in London. The world is full of endless possibilities.

Check out more at Black Butter Records.

metzinrealtime.com : It’s Official

I finally did what had to be done and bought metzinreatime.com. I am not officially the master of my social media domain. How relevant of me.

So we will celebrate by testing links to make sure that the transfer was successful whilst listening to Emeli Sande (going to see her on Wednesday!)

Here is to many more musings in the coming months.

Holla at your girl.

Love and Gin

I would like to thank my bestie Kiwispeaks for this one.

I know Valentine’s day is still 10 days away but this song struck a chord with me and there’s not much more to say because the song says it all.

It makes you blind, it does you in
It makes you think you’re pretty tough
It makes you prone to crime and sin
It makes you say things off the cuff
It’s very small and made of glass
and grossly over-advertised
It turns a genius to an ass
and makes a fool think he is wise
It could make you regret your birth
or turn cartwheels in your best suit
It costs a lot more than it’s worth
and yet there is no substitute
They keep it on a higher shelf
the older and more pure it grows
It has no colour in itself
but it can make you see rainbows
You can find it on the Bowery
or you can find it at Elaine’s
It makes your words more flowery
It makes the sun shine, makes it rain
You just get out what they put in
and they never put in enough
Love is like a bottle of gin
but a bottle of gin is not like love.

DEVolution : January Therapy

It’s the last week of January and I am feeling de-pressed. Well only mildly de-pressed. More like annoyed and down for no good reason. Everything seems to be going fairly well, maybe even better than they have in a while. So why am I dragging my heels, getting majorly irritated at the most non-irritating things and staring into space wondering where it all went wrong when nothing has gone wrong? It’s probably just the weather, or a chemical imbalance, probably a combination.

But just as I was sure a perma-frown was etching itself onto my forehead, I saw that DEVolution has a new release. As I clicked on the link I seriously prayed that I would love it and that it would somehow improve my day, my week, my year. It would take me away from my grey snowflaked existence and remind me of fun, parties, dancing and all good things in life.

And…it has. It is helping. I’m at least 42% happier already – and that’s after five listens in a row. With the promise of gin and friendships I should be grand in the next few hours.

Them Jeans : SBTRKT Remix

When I think of DIM MAK, I think of serious electro beats that 4 to 5 years ago would keep me going all night (not so much these days).

That is why I was pleasantly surprised by one of the artists on their roster, Them Jeans‘, latest remix of SBTRKT’s Hold On. It’s not abrasive, repetitive or loud. It’s perfectly harmonic and a light twist on the already beautifully mellow song. It reminds me more of a Jamie XX remix than something from Them Jeans, which, for my tastes these days, is a pleasant twist from his usual stuff. Skream also enjoyed it a lot too and played it on Radio1 when he took over for Annie Mac last Friday. I hope to be hearing much more of this remix and more stuff like this from Them Jeans!

What do you think?
